Fire Risk Assessment

Aim

This course will provide an understanding of the legislation concerning fire safety in the workplace and the knowledge to comply with these requirements.  It will assist in the identification of fire hazards and risks and their control in the workplace.

 

Objectives

On successful completion of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the principles of combustion, how fires occur and how they spread 
  • Appreciate the requirements imposed on employers by legislation
  • Understand appropriate measures to control the risk of fire breaking out, to safeguard against fatalities or serious injury and to provide effective means of fire fighting.
  • Know when to call in professional help
  • Be able to carry out a simple fire risk assessment
  • Document the results of fire risk assessments

Course Content

The course (standard) will cover:

  • Introduction
  • Fire Safety Legislation 
  • Understanding Fire
  • Fire Fighting Equipment
  • Fire Risk Assessment
  • Fire Detection and Warning
  • Means of Escape
  • Fire Evacuation
  • Record keeping

Other issues of fire risk assessment can be covered if required, for example:

  • Reporting systems and procedures
  • Human behaviour and fire
  • Fire risk management systems
  • Working safely

Assessment

The course is highly participative and consists of tutor led sessions with focused discussions.  Case studies and video will be used as appropriate.  A remote fire risk assessment of the workplace and practical outcomes in the form of action planning for implementation in the work will be included.

This course is designed for Managers with responsibilities for fire precautions in the workplace. Safety Representatives, Representatives of Employee Safety, Estate Managers or any employees who may be requested to undertake fire risk assessments.

Fire Risk Assessment courses can be tailored to meet specific requirements in terms of content and duration.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements but some experience within a supervisory or management role and involvement in health and safety would be desirable.
