IOSH Directing Safely
Aim
This course will give an understanding of the moral, financial and legal implications of health and safety in the workplace.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the importance of strategic health and safety management and how it fits with other business management systems
- Identify causes of accidents and plan for prevention through risk assessment and control strategies
- Appreciate the consequences of failing to manage heath and safety effectively and the legal penalties
- Understand the importance of staff training in health and safety
- Recognise the importance of consultation and communication with employees on health and safety issues
- Appreciate the significance of performance monitoring for continual improvement of health and safety management
Course Content
The course will cover:
- Health and safety management and the financial implications
- Health and safety – getting it wrong
- Health and safety – getting it right
- Planning for success
- People – successful communication and training
- Assessing current performance
- Improving performance.
Assessment
The course is assessed by a project and a multiple choice assessment paper. On successful completion, an IOSH Directing Safely certificate will be awarded.
This course is highly participative and consists of lectures and discussions. Case studies will be used to inform the learning process and the discussions will focus on work related issues.

Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements although experience of health and safety issues and working at a strategic level would be desirable.
