IOSH Managing Safely
Aim
This course will show how safety and health can and should be treated as an integral part of a manager’s responsibilities. The aims are:
- to give managers an understanding of why incidents involving injury or damage occur
- to give managers a basic understanding of risk assessment procedures and control and monitoring strategies
- to ensure managers appreciate the significance of attitudes to risk, and of physical and psychological limitations in the causation of incidents leading to injuries or damage.
Objectives
On successful completion of the course, participants will have passed the examinations necessary for the IOSH Certificate award, and will have demonstrated ability to:
- understand the main legal responsibilities of employers and managers
- apply basic management principles and practices to health and safety issues
- recognise health and safety hazards and control measures
- set practicable health and safety objectives
- take account of risks arising from human error
- communicate effectively on health and safety issues with superiors, work people and health and safety professionals
Course Content
The course will cover:
- Principles of accident prevention
- Common and statute law
- Health and safety management systems
- Practical risk assessment – techniques and control
- Workplace hazards, such as fire, electricity, COSHH, noise and work equipment
- Accident causation and investigation
- Audit and review.
Assessment
The course is assessed by a project and a multiple choice assessment paper. A certificate is awarded when the course study is concluded and the assessments are completed satisfactorily. Certification is valid for 3 years after which a re-certification course can be taken.
This course consists of lectures, discussions and tutorial sessions, supported by a range of video materials.
Entry Requirements
This course is suitable for supervisors and managers from any organisation who are required to manage efficiently and effectively in compliance with both the organisation’s safety policy and health and safety legislation.
