IOSH Supervising Safely
Aim
The course aims to provide persons with a responsibility for others with the relevant knowledge and skills required to supervise safely.
Objectives
On successful completion of the course, delegates will have the required knowledge and information to:
- Work safely as an individual
- Effectively supervise safety
- Contribute to the organisation’s safety performance
- Accident reporting and investigation
Definition of the terms ‘accident’, ‘near miss’ and ‘serious incidents’
Overview of RIDDOR and associated reporting procedures
Accident costs – human, moral and financial - Human factors
Attitude, personality, motivation and so on, and the potential for the prevention of human error
Course Content
- Legal duties, responsibilities and requirements
- Overview, process and practical application of risk assessment
- The legal requirements, establishment and maintenance of safe systems of work
- Accident reporting and investigation
- Monitoring the safety policy, arrangements and procedures
Options for reactive and active monitoring, the various functions of a supervisory role
Evaluating safety data such as accident/incident and maintenance reports
Monitoring systems and the role of the supervisor in monitoring and measuring health and safety performance
Assessment
Understanding of the course material is evaluated by means of a 30-minute written assessment paper plus a practical inspection listing unsafe acts and conditions.
Delegates should ideally have some supervisory function in their role.
