Effective Coaching
Aim
This course will provide a structured approach to improving workplace performance through coaching.
Coaching is a method of training used where on-the-job training for a small number of staff is required. Coaching usually focuses on the development of skills related to workplace activities and is designed to meet the specific needs of the individual on a one to one basis.
Objectives
By the end of the course you should be able to:
- explain the role of a coach
- state the skills, qualities and abilities required of an effective coach
- identify benefits of coaching
- examine a variety of learning styles
- motivate others and monitor performance effectively
- structure a coaching session
Course Content
The course will cover:
- Methods of training on-the-job
- When is coaching appropriate?
- Coaching: - definition and implications
- The role of the coach
- The different coaching styles
- Characteristics of good coaches
- Evaluating your coaching style
- Establishing a coaching process
- Tactics and strategies for motivating others
- Influencing skills that encourage others
- Using appropriate questioning and listening techniques in coaching
- How to recognize and improve skill deficiencies in others
- Measuring and monitoring performance
- Giving and receiving feedback
This course is highly participative and delivered through a mixture of trainer input, large/small group discussions and individual activities.
Assessment
This short course can be used as credit towards the ILM Certificate in First Line Management at Level 3.
It is worth 3 credits and a written assessment must be completed to gain these credits
Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements although some supervisory or managerial experience would be desirable.
