ILM Level 3 Award in First Line Management

Aim

This course will provide the supervisor or first line manager with the opportunity to consider their role in the management structure, to increase their knowledge and develop appropriate skills and behaviours.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of an effective supervisor
  • demonstrate key skills relating to identified supervisory tasks
  • implement Action Planning

The Role of the Manager

  • Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a first line manager or supervisor
  • Be aware of the skills needed to manage well
  • Be clear about the authority and responsibility
  • Consider how you manage in relation to these issues

Analysing and Researching Problems

  • Simple ways to recognise, investigate and analyse problems
  • Objective setting in relation to problem
  • Creative thinking techniques

Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • How to evaluate options
  • Decision making techniques

Communicating your Decision

  • Presenting your case - presentation skills

Managing Conflict

 

  • Possible causes of internal/external conflict
  • The effects of conflict on performance and the individual at work
  • The manager's responsibility in minimising and resolving conflict, and techniques to achieve this

Motivation

 

  • Overview of the factors influencing behaviour at work
  • Basic theories of motivation and their application to teams and individuals
  • Range of techniques to motivate individuals and monitor performance

Giving and Receiving Feedback

 

  • The importance of feedback to improve communication, motivation and performance
  • Types of feedback and its uses to improve the performance of individuals in the workplace

Facilitating and Monitoring Implementation

 

  • Monitoring and review techniques to evaluate outcomes of problem solving activities

Managing and Assessing Performance

  • The purpose and value of formal and informal performance assessment at work
  • Ways to ensure fair and objective assessment
  • Preparations necessary for effective, valid and reliable assessments

Effective Meetings for Managers

  • Why have a meeting?
  • How to contribute effectively to a meeting
  • Roles and responsibilities of the chairperson, the secretary and individuals at a meeting
  • Purposes of minutes and action plans
  • Review of own effectiveness at meetings

The course is participative and the emphasis is on application of the knowledge and skills to the workplace.  Personal Action planning and work improvement projects are also incorporated within the programme.

Assessment

This programme is accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management and a certificate is awarded to those who complete the programme and undertake the required assessment exercises, which include a work-based project and reports.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific requirements but some background of working in teams or in a supervisory role would be an advantage.
