Minute Taking

Aim

This course will enable participants to identify the principles involved in recording minutes accurately.

 

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the roles and responsibilities of the Minutes Secretary
  • listen and take effective notes of meetings
  • write up minutes using an appropriate format and style
 

Course Content

The course (standard) will cover:

  • the range and purpose of meetings
  • the structure of meetings
  • notice of Meetings and Agenda
  • the role of the Secretary and Chairperson
  • the purpose of minutes - the importance of accurate recording
  • recording minutes of a meeting 
  • types of minutes
  • writing up minutes from meeting

Other issues of minute taking can be covered if required, for example:

  • combining materials
  • procedural aspects
  • effective listening skills
 

Assessment

This course will consist of tutor led sessions but will take a workshop approach to enable practice of recording minutes.  Examples of minutes will be used in discussion groups to highlight issues. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the newly learned skills to redraft their minutes and make them more effective.

 

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements but some experience at minute taking would be desirable.

This course is suitable for those who have to record details of meetings, large or small.
